bio:
Kalev Erickson (b. 1982, Providence, Rhode Island, USA) is a visual artist and archivist based in London, UK. Following his studies in photography at London College of Printing, he began working with the Archive of Modern Conflict, a renowned independent collection of photographic and visual material compiled over four decades. Through his work with the archive, he has contributed to numerous acclaimed exhibitions and award-winning publications, collaborating with artists, photographers, writers and historians.
Erickson’s sustained engagement with the AMC’s diverse and unique collections has become central to the development of his artistic practice. Bringing archival research into dialogue with his own photographic production, he explores how images acquire and shift meaning through changes in context, association and presentation. Working across photography, collage, artist books and site-specific installation, he employs processes of collecting, editing and reorganising to question the photograph’s status as a fixed historical record. Through the juxtaposition and recontextualisation of images, he constructs visual narratives that examine the complex relationships between photography, memory and the interpretation of history.
His work has been exhibited internationally at institutions and photography festivals, including Foto Arsenal Wien, Vienna, Austria; Maison Européenne de la Photographie, Paris, France; Fotografia Europea, Reggio Emilia, Italy; Itaú Cultural, São Paulo, Brazil; Festival Images Vevey, Switzerland; Centro Cultural de la Villa Fernán Gómez, PHotoESPAÑA, Madrid, Spain; Centro de las Artes, Monterrey, Mexico; Foam Fotografiemuseum (presentation in Arles), France; and Krakow Photomonth, Poland.
